Wellington City Gallery asked me to develop a series of art workshops that coincided with the Te Wiki o te Reo Māori Maori Language Week. After some consultation I decided to create a large-scale typographic chalk-work. The text in this work was based on whakatuaki (Maori proverbs) which were chosen by tauira (students) from the schools we collaborated with. These schools included Te Aro, Otari and Clyde Quay School.
After the initial sketches were completed, the design was digitised and then transferred onto the wall. In groups the students were then tasked with adding their own flare to the sketched out letters. Thanks to Kiri Hiha, Claire Hopkins and Tracey Monastra from Wellington City Gallery for you support and help running the project. Also, tēnā rawa atu ki a Ashley Mackenzie-White for helping me with the tauira.
A time-lapse of the artwork can be found here on youtube. Thanks also to Steve Mcvey for this and the other great photos.
