The Beautiful Ones
The Beautiful Ones is a hyper real digital love story written and directed by esteemed playwright Hone Kouka, and featuring choreography by Dolina Wehipeihana. As the visual designer I was tasked with creating animations which would act as backdrops throughout the show. The process began with the creation of a number of sketches, which were artistic responses to the music Hone had provided. These were then digitised and slowly brought to life in Adobe After Effects.
The main design challenge here was that each animation needed to be split into 8 separate parts for projection onto the floating screens. However, with the help of AV wizard Laurie Dean, we managed to figure things out. As my first foray into theatre, it was amazing to see how Hone and Miria from Tawata Productions pull it all together. With constant changes to music and design, actors and singers rehearsing in and around their day jobs, and everything else that comes with promotion and organization of an event, its a mind-boggling affair that only the most hardened multi-taskers could handle.
Personally, one of the most rewarding parts of working on The Beautiful Ones was that I got to meet and work with so many talented creative people. This included musicians Tama Waipara, k*saba, Hone Hurihanganui, Kali Kopae, Jayde Marter; designers, Wai Mihinui and Jaimee Warda; stylist Sopheak Seng, and last but not least, the performers which included Tanemahuta Gray, Nathan Gray, Scotty Cotter, Kali Kopae, Manuel Solomon, Moana Ete, Sandip Dosanjh, Braedyn Togi, Maddison Hale, Ngakopa Volkerling, Sharn te Pou, Callum Mcleay, Ian Lesa and Vanessa Kumar.
