In 2012 a series of my digital works were exhibited on 34 digital billboards in Times Square, New York. I had the amazing opportunity to show my work in some of the world’s most sought-after advertising space after winning first prize in a nationwide digital design competition.
For the contest I designed a new animated piece, to play on continuous loop, along with earlier pieces from my Ko Aotearoa Tenei and Digiwhaiwhai series of shows. My work was selected from 131 entrants, and I was flown to New York to see it live alongside the two other winners.
Twelve billboards were hired, including the Nasdaq, ABC, Fox and Sony and 24 digital screens, to display the designs transmitted by fibre optic cables from New Zealand. It was run by telecommunications infrastructure company Chorus, to show the potential for ultrafast broadband.
